Vinny Owens taking his load of water bottles back up to the peloton
Director Sportif Haldane Morris offers guidance as Vinny Owens experiences taking bottles from the team car for the first time in at the Foothills Road Race in Merco
On Sunday at the team meeting before the Merco Credit Union Foothills Road Race, I was asked to do a job that I had never done before. Usually I am asked to do things such as cover the early attacks, drive the break for the designated leader or to conserve my energy for the hills. On this day, however, I was asked to be designated bottle carrier.

The weather gods had promised war earlier in the week. Rain and wind would rule the day at the Merco Downtown Grand Prix, the traditional season opener for the NRC-caliber Pro/Elite peloton. But even the weather gods can break their promises and so the entire Yahoo! Cycling Team and a 125+ sized field lined up for a dry, occasionally sunny, battle for the podium spots at the 2010 Merco Grand Prix. The team was relaxed at the pre-race meeting and warmed up together along the canal donning its new kits for the first time — an encouraging sign given the competitive level of the field with the Bissell, United Healthcare, Bahati Foundation, California Giant, and various other known Pros and teams present in full.
