It turns out I like short fast prologues. Who’d have guessed? It was pretty much dark by 8:52 when I started the 4 mile course, and the constant rain on the oil-slicked PIR motor speedway made some of the corners pretty harrowing. Earlier riders finished with two seemingly contradictory things to say, “A couple of times I felt my wheels slipping out,” and, “I wish I’d gone faster in the corners.” Tyler gave me a last minute pep-talk while Haldane swapped wheels for me. He said, “The first gnarly left-hander has a pit lane on the inside, making it look a lot tighter than it really is. Its an optical illusion. You can rail it. On Sunday at the team meeting before the Merco Credit Union Foothills Road Race, I was asked to do a job that I had never done before. Usually I am asked to do things such as cover the early attacks, drive the break for the designated leader or to conserve my energy for the hills. On this day, however, I was asked to be designated bottle carrier.

The weather gods had promised war earlier in the week. Rain and wind would rule the day at the Merco Downtown Grand Prix, the traditional season opener for the NRC-caliber Pro/Elite peloton. But even the weather gods can break their promises and so the entire Yahoo! Cycling Team and a 125+ sized field lined up for a dry, occasionally sunny, battle for the podium spots at the 2010 Merco Grand Prix. The team was relaxed at the pre-race meeting and warmed up together along the canal donning its new kits for the first time — an encouraging sign given the competitive level of the field with the Bissell, United Healthcare, Bahati Foundation, California Giant, and various other known Pros and teams present in full.
